Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
Park the Subaru Forester on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow the car to cool down if it has been recently driven.
Step 2: Access the Washer Bottle
Locate the washer bottle, which is usually positioned at the bottom of the engine bay. It may be necessary to remove a portion of the inner wheel arch or bumper trim to access the washer bottle easily. Use appropriate tools to remove these parts carefully.
Step 3: Disconnect Power
If the vehicle's battery is still connected, it's a good idea to disconnect it to prevent any electrical mishaps while working with the washer pump. Locate the battery and carefully disconnect the negative terminal (black) using a wrench.
Step 4: Remove Old Washer Pump
The old washer pump should be push-fitted into the washer bottle. Carefully remove any connectors or clips securing the washer pump in place. Gently pull the old pump out of the washer bottle. If it's hard to remove the washer pipes from the pump, use a hairdryer to heat them up, making it easier to detach.
Step 5: Install Grommet (if separate)
If the grommet is not pre-installed on the new washer pump, place it into the designated groove on the pump. The grommet ensures a proper seal between the pump and the washer bottle, preventing leaks.
Step 6: Attach Washer Pump
Insert the new washer pump (with or without the grommet, depending on the pump's design) into the washer bottle's opening. Ensure it is securely seated in place.
Step 7: Connect Washer Pipes
Reattach the washer pipes to the new pump. Push-fit them onto the appropriate connectors until they are firmly in place. If there are any clips, secure them to keep the pipes from coming loose.
Step 8: Reconnect the Battery
If you disconnected the vehicle's battery in Step 3, reattach the negative terminal (black) to the battery and tighten it securely.
Step 9: Test the Washer Pump
Before assembling everything back, test the new washer pump to make sure it's working correctly. Add Windscreen Washer Fluid to the washer bottle and operate the windshield wiper/washer controls to check if the pump is spraying the fluid onto the windshield.
Step 10: Reassemble
If the pump is functioning correctly, reassemble any inner wheel arch or bumper trim that you removed to access the washer bottle.
Step 11: Add More Windscreen Washer Fluid
Fill the washer bottle with Windscreen Washer Fluid. Avoid using anti-freeze, as it can damage the system. It's recommended to use more washer fluid than recommended to reduce the chances of freezing during cold weather.
Step 12: Final Check
Double-check all connections and fittings to ensure everything is secure and leak-free. Test the windshield washer system once more to confirm proper operation.
